Richard Avedon: Darkness & Light

"The moment an emotion or fact is transformed into a photograph, it is no longer a fact

but an opinion. There is no such thing as inaccuracy in a photograph. All photographs

are accurate. None of them is the truth."  - Richard Avedon

In Richard Avedon documentary, he was always making his patients comfortable when it came to them having to take a photo. He would just make them do what he thought would be their thing or what would go with the concept that they are working on. Avedon wanted to take photos at the right moment, but ever knew when the right moment was until he looked at the photo. His work was about taking risks because you would never know when something is worthwhile during the photo.

This photo was chosen because Nastassja Kinski was laying there for hours with the snake until Avedon felt like the right moment would come. It all started because they were talking and she said that she liked snakes and so he had gotten one for the photoshoot. They had her lay on the cold floor with the snake in between her legs until the snake was moving where it wanted to go to get a good shot. They said that she moved around until the snake was close to her like that and they wanted her to stay still to capture this moment because they weren't sure if the snake would ever kiss her ear like that again.

The quote from Avedon explains that photos that involves people taking risks are something that people would like because those are the photos that would turn out good even if it came out bad. Others may find that the photo that the photographer calls terrible would be something that they would find amazing because everyone has different preferences. The right photo everyone sees is different and I find that this photo that Avedon had done is something beautiful to the extent of me not doing it myself because I would be scared. Everyone could make their own opinions towards about a photo that anyone could agree to disagree on. A photo doesn't have a true meaning behind it because no one know the meaning besides the people that were there.
