Ralph Gibson ~ Charise J

Ralph Gibson

Ralph Gibson was known for his light, shadow, and form work. He did his photos without color to show the effect of light and shadow has in a image. He studied his photography work at San Francisco Art Institute. He later became an assistance for Dorothea Lange and Robert Frank. This had led him to becoming an independent photographer.

This picture was chosen because of the shadow work. Since we are working on composition, light and shadow, and reflection, this piece shows two of what we are working on in my perspective. The shadow from the mans face can be seen as a reflection because it is in front of him. Moving on to the body that is being shown, The light that is hitting the body gives it a shadow that gives the figure some kind of depth to not make it look like a 2D figure. When I had first seen this photo, I didn't notice the naked body because the main shadow that was being shown was from the man's head which is a focal point in my perspective.
